Washer Won't Spin or Drain? 7 Things to Check

A washer that stops with water still in the drum, or finishes a cycle with clothes dripping wet, is not always broken. Spin and drain problems are often caused by an unbalanced load, a clog or a door switch. Work through the checks below before you book a repair. If none of them helps, you will be able to tell the technician exactly what you have ruled out.

Safety first: unplug the washer before you reach into the drum, open the pump filter or move the machine. Have towels and a shallow pan ready, since draining by hand releases a lot of water.

1. Rebalance the load

Washers detect an unbalanced load and will slow or skip the spin to protect themselves. One heavy item, such as a bath mat, a comforter or a single pair of jeans, can be enough. Open the washer, spread the items evenly around the drum, and run a drain and spin cycle. If you washed a single bulky item, add a couple of towels to balance it.

2. Check that the lid or door locks

A washer will not spin unless it knows the lid or door is closed and locked. Make sure nothing is caught in the door, and listen for the click of the lock when the cycle starts. On top-loaders, a broken lid switch or strike is a common reason the drum fills and agitates but never spins. On front-loaders, a failed door lock usually shows an error code.

3. Look at the drain hose

Pull the washer out carefully and check the drain hose at the back. It should not be kinked, crushed or pushed too far down into the standpipe. A hose that is pushed in too far can siphon or trap air. If the standpipe or laundry sink is slow to drain on its own, the clog is in the house drain rather than the washer.

4. Clean the pump filter (front-loaders)

Most front-loading washers have a drain pump filter behind a small panel at the bottom front of the machine. It catches coins, hair ties, buttons and lint before they reach the pump. Put down towels, drain the water through the small hose next to the filter if there is one, then slowly unscrew the filter and clean it. A blocked pump filter is the most common reason a front-loader will not drain.

5. Watch for too many suds

Too much detergent, or regular detergent in a high-efficiency washer, creates suds that the washer reads as water. It will keep trying to rinse and drain, and may stop with an error. Use only HE detergent in an HE washer, measure it, and run an extra rinse to clear the suds.

6. Check the cycle and settings

A "rinse and hold", "no spin" or delicate cycle can leave water or very wet clothes in the drum on purpose. Choose a normal cycle with a high spin speed and try a small load before you assume something has failed.

7. Listen during drain and spin

Start a drain and spin cycle and listen. A hum with no water moving usually means something is jammed in the pump, or the pump has failed. If the motor runs but the drum does not turn, a belt, coupling or drive part may have worn out. Loud banging or grinding during spin can point to worn suspension parts or bearings. Stop the cycle if the washer moves across the floor.

When to call a technician

Book a repair if any of the following apply:

  • The washer still will not drain or spin after you have rebalanced the load, checked the hose and cleaned the pump filter.
  • The pump hums but no water moves, or the motor runs but the drum does not turn.
  • The door or lid will not lock, or the washer shows an error code that keeps coming back.
  • You hear grinding or banging during spin, or see water leaking from under the washer.

Do not leave wet clothes sitting in the drum for long. Move them to a tub or another washer if you can, and leave the door open to let the drum air out.
